Aung San Suu Kyi, Burma's beacon of liberty...free at last?
Nobel Peace Laureate Daw Aung San Suu Kyi of Burma* is at the precipice of restored personal freedom after years of an unjust, military-imposed house arrest. The detention order that governs her movements is set to expire on Saturday, November 13, 2010 at 6:00pm. ##UPDATE 6:05am Nov 13 2010 SUU KYI RELEASED## With the possible exception of China's Liu Xiaobo (2010 Nobel Peace Prize), she is a political prisoner like no other-- fairly elected Prime Minister and conscience of her country, shut down by the corrupt junta that fears her. Her release is apparent because her continued detention has become too extreme a liability even for this shameless government. Let us hope her rights are restored without further delay. Here is Steve McCurry's 1995 portrait of Suu in her garden. [##update AP video report here##]
